How Do You Read a Door Closer Size Chart? A Guide to Matching Size to Your Door

A “size 3” door closer is not 3 inches long. The number refers to closing force, measured against door width and weight. Get that wrong and the door either slams shut or never latches.

Two standards exist side by side. EN 1154 (Europe) uses grades 1 through 7. ANSI/BHMA A156.4 (North America) uses grades 1 through 6. They overlap but aren’t identical. Don’t cross-reference between the two without converting.

The Core Rule

Bigger door, heavier door, higher size. That’s the whole chart in one line.

For most interior commercial doors, the rule looks like this:

Add door weight into the equation. A solid-core oak door at 1100 mm needs more force than a hollow-core door the same width. The size chart assumes a standard core. Heavy or fire-rated cores push you up one grade.

Situations That Force a Larger Size

The base chart assumes normal conditions. Adjust upward when you hit any of these:

  • Glass or aluminum doors — minimal frame support means the closer does more work
  • Tall or wide doors over 2.1 m (7 ft) — leverage from the extra height increases the force needed
  • High-traffic entries — over 200 cycles per day wears out undersized springs fast
  • Wind exposure or pressure differentials — coastal buildings, stairwell pressurization, cleanroom entries
  • Fire-rated assemblies — the closer must reliably latch from any opening angle

When in doubt, go one size up. Undersizing is the most common cause of closers being replaced within the first year.

Mistakes Buyers Make with the Chart

Three errors show up over and over:

  1. Looking at width only. A wide hollow-core door can still need a smaller size than a narrow solid-core door. Weight matters as much as width.
  2. Mixing EN and ANSI numbers. A “size 3” in EN 1154 is roughly equivalent to a Grade 3 in ANSI, but the test weights and cycles differ. Treat them as separate scales.
  3. Buying a fixed-size closer when the door situation isn’t fixed. A door that might be replaced or re-hung within a few years should have an adjustable closer — one that covers a range like size 2–4 or size 3–6. Fixed-size models save a few dollars upfront but lock you in.
