When you swing a door open past roughly 70–75°, most closers slam the door back without warning. A delayed action door closer doesn’t. It pauses the door for a few seconds, then resumes a normal closing arc.

- Who uses the door? Wheelchairs, beds, carts, and the elderly all need the pause. Office staff in a back corridor do not.
- How wide and how heavy is the door? Delayed action only works on closers rated for the door’s size and weight — usually Grade 1 or Grade 2 in ANSI 156.4 terms.
- Does code or the project spec require it? ADA, IBC, and most healthcare facility guidelines call for delayed action on accessible doors in certain occupancy types. If the spec says “accessibility compliant,” that usually means delayed action is in scope.
If the answer to all three is yes, you need a closer with an adjustable delayed action valve, not just a basic model.
Specs Worth Checking Before You Order
When comparing models, look past the marketing line and read the actual cut sheet:
- Adjustable hold range — most quality closers offer 5–30 seconds; some are fixed at the factory
- Independent valve design — the delayed action valve should be adjustable without affecting sweep or latch speeds
- Backcheck included — delayed action and backcheck are often sold together; missing backcheck on a high-traffic door is a common spec error
- Conformidade — EN 1154 for European projects, ANSI/BHMA A156.4 for North American projects
If the cut sheet doesn’t list a separate delayed action adjustment, the valve probably isn’t there.
